EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the stern gaze of Captain Cyril Thomas Moulden Fuller (1874-1942) of HMS Cumberland during the early stages of the First World War. Dated October 1914, the image finds Fuller in his element as the commanding officer of the British cruiser in Cameroon, west central Africa. As a seasoned naval officer, Fuller had already seen action in the Boer War and the Russo-Japanese War before being appointed to HMS Cumberland. With the outbreak of the First World War, he led his ship in the protection of British interests in the region, playing a crucial role in the blockade of German ports and the subsequent capture of the German colony of Cameroon. Fuller's career in the Royal Navy spanned over three decades, culminating in his promotion to the rank of admiral in 1931. This photograph, taken during his time in Cameroon, offers a glimpse into the life of a dedicated and accomplished naval leader during a pivotal moment in world history. The image is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and bravery of those who served in the British armed forces during the First World War.
