EDITORS COMMENTS
The Colossi of Memnon, located in the Theban Necropolis of Luxor, Egypt, are two massive stone statues depicting Pharaoh Amenhotep III in a seated position. These colossal figures, each standing approximately 18 meters high, were carved from quartzite and sandstone during the Eighteenth Dynasty of the New Kingdom, around the 14th century BC. The eastern colossus, featured in this photograph, faces the rising sun and was originally placed at the entrance to the mortuary temple of Amenhotep III, known as Medinet Habu. The colossi were named after the Greek god Memnon, who, according to mythology, was the father of Penthesilea, the queen of the Amazons, and was believed to have been buried in Thebes. The statues were said to emit a mysterious sound at sunrise, which was believed to be the voice of Memnon greeting the sun. The eastern colossus, with its serene expression and intricately detailed headdress, is a testament to the artistic and architectural prowess of the ancient Egyptians. Despite being damaged, with parts of the figure missing and the head of the pharaoh having been restored, the statue remains an awe-inspiring sight. The northern base of the statue bears inscriptions in hieroglyphics and demotic script, which provide valuable information about the pharaoh and his reign. The Colossi of Memnon are a significant historical and archaeological site, offering insights into the ancient Egyptian civilization and their beliefs. They continue to captivate visitors from around the world, who come to marvel at the grandeur and mystery of these ancient stone giants.
