EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the unique scene of Mount House in Hadley Common, Barnet, serving as the temporary home and Country House School for the Architectural Association during the tumultuous year of 1940. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty of World War II, the Architectural Association, like many institutions, was forced to evacuate its London premises to escape the relentless bombing raids. Mount House, with its grand facade and sprawling grounds, provided a tranquil refuge for the students and faculty. Here, they continued their studies in architecture, undeterred by the war that raged around them. The students are seen engrossed in their work, their desks scattered across the spacious rooms, their concentration unbroken by the wartime surroundings. The Royal Family lent their support to the evacuation effort, and the Architectural Association was granted the use of Mount House through the generosity of its owner, Sir Charles Mander. The students were grateful for this opportunity to continue their education, even in such unconventional circumstances. The photograph, taken by the Illustrated London News Ltd and captured by the talented photographer Mary Evans, offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in history. It serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination of those who refused to let the war disrupt their pursuit of knowledge and the importance of community and support during times of adversity.
