EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm's Encyclopedia of Natural History: Amphibia, published in Augsburg in 1794, showcases three fascinating species of amphibians: the Creole frog (Leptodactylus ocellatus), the American toad (Bufo americanus), and the Surinam horned frog (Ceratophrys cornuta). The Creole frog, native to Central and South America, is depicted in the upper left corner of the print. With its vibrant green coloration and distinctive black spots, this species is a true beauty of the amphibian world. The Creole frog is an excellent swimmer and spends most of its time in or near water. Next to it, the American toad (Bufo americanus) can be found in the upper right corner. This common amphibian is native to North America and is easily identified by its warty skin and distinctive coloration, which ranges from brown to gray with irregular black spots. American toads are terrestrial creatures and are known for their distinctive "trill" call. Finally, the Surinam horned frog (Ceratophrys cornuta), also known as the Pac-Man frog due to its large mouth, is shown in the lower part of the print. This species is native to South America and is characterized by its large, powerful limbs and distinctive horns on its head. The Surinam horned frog is an ambush predator and uses its large mouth to swallow its prey whole. This beautiful and detailed engraving is a testament to the natural history illustration of the late 18th century. It not only showcases the natural beauty of these three amphibian species but also provides valuable information for the scientific community of the time. Today, it remains an important historical document in the fields of zoology and herpetology.
