EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts Haj Amin Al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem from 1921 until the 1950s. Born in 1895, Al-Husseini was a prominent Muslim and Islamic leader in Palestine during a tumultuous period in its history. He held great influence over the Arab population in Palestine and was a vocal opponent of Zionist ambitions to establish a Jewish state in the region. Al-Husseini's leadership role began in earnest during the 1920s, as tensions between Arabs and Jews in Palestine began to escalate. He played a key role in organizing protests and uprisings against British rule and Jewish immigration, which ultimately led to the 1936-1939 Arab Revolt. During World War II, Al-Husseini fled Palestine and spent time in Nazi Germany, where he met with Adolf Hitler and propagandized for the Axis powers. He returned to Palestine in 1945, and continued his anti-Zionist activities, which included inciting violence against Jews and collaborating with Arab militias. The 1948 Arab-Israeli War marked the end of Al-Husseini's political career, as the Arab forces were defeated and Israel declared its independence. He spent the remainder of his life in exile, living in Lebanon and Egypt. Al-Husseini passed away in 1974, leaving behind a complex and controversial legacy. This photograph captures Al-Husseini in the prime of his political career, with a stern expression and dressed in traditional Arab garb. The image serves as a powerful reminder of the tumultuous history of the Middle East and the ongoing struggle for power and identity in the region.
