EDITORS COMMENTS
HMS Marlborough in Dry Dock in Malta, circa 1923: A Glimpse into the Past of the British Royal Navy's Iron Duke-class Battleship This evocative photograph captures HMS Marlborough, an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy, undergoing repairs in a dry dock in Malta during the 1920s. Named in honor of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, this formidable warship was built between January 1912 and June 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard and entered service just prior to the First World War. Assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet after the war, HMS Marlborough played a significant role in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War (1919-1920) in the Black Sea. She also participated in the Greco-Turkish War, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and order in the Mediterranean region. In this image, the battleship's prow proudly emerges from the protective embrace of the dry dock, while the porps (propellers) are secured under the chocks, awaiting the next phase of repairs. The Maltese flag flies high above the dockyard in Valletta, a testament to the close relationship between the British Royal Navy and the people of Malta. As you gaze upon this historical photograph, you can almost hear the hum of activity as sailors and workers toil away, ensuring that HMS Marlborough remains a formidable symbol of the British Navy's might and resilience. This image offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a tangible connection to a bygone era of naval history.
