EDITORS COMMENTS
Josse de Damhouder (circa 1511-1581), also known as Damhouderius, was a renowned Flemish jurist of the late medieval period. Born in the Spanish Netherlands, Damhouder studied law at the University of Louvain and went on to become a professor of civil law there. He later served as a judge in the Court of Appeals in Brussels and was appointed as the royal advocate and counselor to the Habsburg monarchs, Philip II of Spain and his son, Philip III. Damhouder is best known for his significant contributions to the field of jurisprudence, particularly in the areas of criminal and procedural law. He authored several influential works, including "De rebus judicariis" (On Judicial Matters), which provided a comprehensive analysis of criminal law and procedure, and "Novellae et constitutiones Belgicae" (New Laws and Constitutions of the Netherlands), which compiled and explained the legal codes of the Habsburg Netherlands. Damhouder's legal expertise extended beyond the borders of the Spanish Netherlands, and he was consulted by various European rulers and legal scholars. He also played a role in the drafting of the Dutch Civil Code and the Treaty of Cateau-Cambresis, which ended the Italian Wars. This photograph print captures the image of Josse de Damhouder, a man of great intellect and legal acumen, who left an indelible mark on the development of European jurisprudence. His works continue to be studied and referenced by legal scholars today, making him an enduring figure in the history of law.
