EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Trophime Gerard, Marquis de Lally-Tolendal, a prominent French statesman during and after the French Revolution. Born in 1751, Lally-Tolendal served in various roles in the French military and diplomatic corps, gaining a reputation for his courage and diplomatic skills. During the Revolution, Lally-Tolendal was a key figure in the royalist movement, serving as the French ambassador to the United States from 1792 to 1794. He was instrumental in securing American support for the French monarchy and negotiating the Treaty of Alliance and Commerce between France and the United States. After the fall of the monarchy, Lally-Tolendal went into exile in the United States, where he lived until 1802. He returned to France in 1802, where he was appointed as a senator and served as a deputy in the Chamber of Deputies. Despite his royalist past, Lally-Tolendal was able to adapt to the new political climate and played an important role in the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy in 1814. He was appointed as the governor of Bordeaux and later served as the ambassador to the United States once again from 1815 to 1816. This print captures the distinguished and noble bearing of Lally-Tolendal, reflecting his impressive career in French politics and diplomacy. The Marquis de Lally-Tolendal's legacy as a statesman and diplomat continues to be celebrated in French history, making this print a valuable addition to any collection of historical portraits.
