Fireboat tackling fire at Colonial Wharf, East London
A fireboat tackles a fire at Colonial Wharf, Wapping High Street, East London, 27 September 1935. This was a typical big Thamesside fire of the sort which the London Fire Brigade has tackled for over 100 years. The nine-storey warehouse was full of crude rubber and burned for four days, during which time a number of explosions took place. Sixty pumps, 20 special appliances and three fireboats, manned in all by 600 firefighters, fought the huge blaze: they successfully prevented the fire from spreading to the surrounding warehouses

EDITORS COMMENTS
A fiery spectacle unfolds in this historic photograph as a fireboat bravely tackles a blaze at Colonial Wharf in Wapping High Street, East London, on 27 September 1935. This image captures a typical Thameside fire, a common challenge that the London Fire Brigade has faced for over a century. The nine-storey warehouse, filled with crude rubber, had been burning for four days, during which time several explosions occurred. The London Fire Brigade mobilized an impressive force to combat the inferno: 60 pumps, 20 special appliances, and three fireboats, manned by 600 firefighters. The firefighters' tireless efforts prevented the flames from spreading to the surrounding warehouses, saving potentially countless lives and livelihoods. The black smoke billowing from the burning warehouse contrasts starkly with the Thames River and the surrounding area, creating a haunting and dramatic scene. This aerial view of the fire scene highlights the sheer scale of the blaze and the determination of the London Fire Brigade in tackling it. This photograph is a testament to the courage and skill of the firefighters who risked their lives to protect their community during the 1930s, a decade marked by economic hardship and adversity.
