EDITORS COMMENTS
Lord Glantawe, John Jones Jenkins (1835-1915), is depicted in this striking photograph from the Vanity Fair archive. Jenkins, a Welsh tin-plate manufacturer and Liberal politician, was a prominent figure in Swansea's history. He served as the city's Mayor three times (1869, 1879, and 1880), High Sheriff of Glamorgan in 1889, and represented Carmarthen in Parliament from 1892 to 1896 and again from 1895 to 1900. Born in Swansea, Jenkins rose to prominence in the local tin-plate industry, which was a significant contributor to the city's economy. His political career began in earnest when he was elected as a Liberal Member of Parliament for Carmarthen. During his tenure in Parliament, he advocated for various social and economic reforms, including the extension of the franchise and the improvement of working conditions for laborers. Despite his political successes, Jenkins remained deeply connected to his hometown. He continued to be involved in local affairs and was a respected community leader. In recognition of his contributions to Swansea and Wales, Jenkins was granted a peerage in 1902, becoming the 1st Baron Glantawe. This photograph, taken during Jenkins' political career, captures the intensity and determination of a man who dedicated his life to serving his community and country. The image is a testament to the rich history of Swansea and the influential figures who shaped its past.
