In this elegant photograph, Nadejda Mikhailovna Mountbatten, Marchioness of Milford Haven (1896-1963) and her husband, George Mountbatten, Marquis of Milford Haven (1892-1938), are seen during their visit to New York in 1924. Nadejda was the second daughter of Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich of Russia and his morganatic wife, Countess Sophie von Merenberg. Her elder sister was Countess Anastasia de Torby. George, who was previously known as Prince George of Battenberg, Earl of Medina, was the elder son of Prince Louis of Battenberg and Princess Victoria of Hesse. The Mountbattens were a prominent European royal family with a rich and complex history. Nadejda and George's marriage took place in 1917, just before the Russian Revolution, and they spent some time in exile in Switzerland before settling in the United Kingdom. They were known for their glamorous social life and were frequent guests at high society events.
