EDITORS COMMENTS
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616), the renowned Spanish writer, is depicted in this engraving by Capuz after a painting by Eugenio Oliva, published in The Spanish and American Illustration in 1883. In the image, Cervantes is shown in an interior, seated in a worn chair with a quill pen in hand, deeply engrossed in the task of writing the dedication for his masterpiece, "Persiles and Sigismunda," a popular romance novel of the time. The aged author, with a furrowed brow and a monk's cross on his chest, is surrounded by the tranquil quietude of his study, adorned with a crucifix on the wall, symbolizing his devotion and spirituality. Born in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, in 1547, Cervantes is considered one of the greatest writers in the Spanish language and a pioneer of the modern novel. His works, including "Don Quixote," "Persiles and Sigismunda," and "La Numancia," have left an indelible mark on world literature. This evocative engraving captures the essence of Cervantes' dedication and focus as he penned the introduction to his beloved creation, "Persiles and Sigismunda," a testament to his unwavering commitment to his craft.
