EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing illustration from the early 20th century showcases two revolutionary inventions that transformed the process of milking cows. Figure I and II depict the Lawrence-Kennedy electric cow milker, a groundbreaking innovation that harnessed the power of electricity to automate the milking process. The Lawrence-Kennedy milker, patented in 1904, utilized a vacuum pump to create a suction that drew milk from the cow's udders through a system of tubes. The milk was then collected in a container, making the process more efficient and less labor-intensive. In Figures IV and V, another significant invention is introduced: a new hand-milking machine designed by Mr. C.S. Padfield of Bath. This machine, shown in Figure 21, was a handheld device that utilized a piston and cylinder mechanism to create a vacuum, allowing the farmer to milk the cow more comfortably and efficiently. The hand-milking machine, invented in the same year as the Lawrence-Kennedy milker, was an important alternative for farmers who preferred a more traditional milking method. The Lawrence-Kennedy electric cow milker was imported into the UK on the 30th of December, 1904, marking a significant milestone in agricultural history. These inventions revolutionized the dairy industry and paved the way for further advancements in milking technology. This illustration offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the ingenuity and innovation that shaped the agricultural landscape of the early 20th century.
