EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking portrait, Colonel Hugh O'Donnell (1739-1799) is depicted with a stern and determined expression, reflecting his strong convictions and unwavering commitment to his cause. The eldest son of Sir Neal O'Donnell of Newport, County Mayo, Colonel O'Donnell served as Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Donegal in Grattan's Parliament from 1789 to 1799. Both he and his brother, James Moore O'Donnell, were fervently opposed to the Act of Union, which aimed to unite Ireland and Great Britain under a single parliament in London. In his maiden speech to the Irish House of Commons on 22 January 1799, Colonel O'Donnell boldly expressed his opposition to the Act of Union, leading to his dismissal from the army. Despite the consequences, he remained steadfast in his beliefs and continued to advocate for Irish independence. Tragically, he passed away on 1st September 1799, leaving behind a legacy as a brave and principled Irish patriot. This portrait, dated circa 1795-96, was painted by the renowned Scottish artist, Hugh Douglas Hamilton (1739-1808). Hamilton was known for his portraits of prominent figures of the time, and this painting of Colonel O'Donnell is a testament to his skill and artistry. The intricate details of the Colonel's uniform, the rich colors, and the intense gaze of his eyes all contribute to a powerful and evocative image that captures the spirit of a man who dedicated his life to the cause of Irish freedom.
