EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of disembarkation for the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers as they landed on the shores of Asnelles, Normandy on June 6, 1944. Part of the 56th Independent Infantry Brigade, which had been attached to the 50th Division, the Borderers were among the first British troops to set foot on French soil during the D-Day landings. The soldiers can be seen wading through the shallow water, carrying their equipment and weapons, determined to push inland and secure a foothold for the Allied forces. The Memorial in this image, now bearing the Welsh flag, was unveiled on June 5, 1994, to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers during World War II. This powerful image serves as a poignant reminder of the pivotal role played by the British forces in the D-Day landings and the ultimate victory in the European theatre of the war.
