This evocative print captures the intensity and chaos of the Second Battle of Copenhagen, which took place from August 15 to September 7, 1807. The British Navy, under the command of Vice-Admiral Sir James Saumarez and Rear-Admiral Sir Hyde Parker, bombarded the Danish capital in an attempt to seize the Danish fleet and prevent it from falling into the hands of the French. The image shows the Danish city of Copenhagen under attack, with smoke rising from the buildings and the harbor as British ships fire their cannon at the Danish fortifications. Horses and troops are seen on the shore, ready to advance once the naval bombardment has weakened the Danish defenses. The Danish ships, some with their sails still hoisted, are visible in the background, attempting to defend the harbor. The Second Battle of Copenhagen was a significant naval engagement of the Napoleonic Wars, with far-reaching consequences.
