EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the exterior of the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos in Spain during the 18th century. The Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, is located in the heart of the historic city of Burgos and is renowned for its intricate stone carvings and stunning stained glass windows. The Cathedral was built between the 13th and 16th centuries and was originally a Domenican monastery. In the foreground of the image, we can see the cloisters of the monastery, where the monks would have spent hours in quiet contemplation. The Cathedral was consecrated in 1444 and was the seat of the powerful Bishop Don Alonso de Fonseca, who was also the Grand Inquisitor of the Spanish Inquisition. The Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos is a significant religious and historical site in Spain. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 and continues to attract visitors from around the world who are drawn to its architectural beauty and rich history. The image, created by Giulio Ferrario in his "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World" published in Florence in 1829, offers a glimpse into the past and provides a visual record of this magnificent structure as it appeared over 200 years ago.
