This evocative image captures the final moments of Lucius Cary, 2nd Viscount Falkland, during the First Battle of Newbury in Berkshire on 20 September 1643. The English Civil War (1642-1651) was a pivotal period in British history, marked by political and religious upheaval. Cary, a prominent Royalist commander, is depicted here in the thick of the battle, surrounded by his troops and engaged in fierce hand-to-hand combat with Parliamentarian forces, also known as Roundheads.
