EDITORS COMMENTS
In this illustration from the 1932 edition of "Prehistoric Life" by Wilhelm Bolsche, we are transported back in time to the Late Triassic period, approximately 235 million years ago, to witness the fossil skeleton of an extinct predatory dinosaur, the Plateosaurus trossingensis. This remarkable discovery was made in the town of Halberstadt, Germany. The Plateosaurus trossingensis, a member of the Plateosauridae family, was a large, herbivorous dinosaur, measuring up to 12 meters in length and weighing around 4 tons. Contrary to its herbivorous diet, this dinosaur's skeletal structure suggests that it possessed powerful limbs and a robust hip structure, indicating that it may have been capable of agile movement and potentially even some degree of predation. The intricately detailed illustration, created by Hugo Wolff, Maage, and W. Bolsche, showcases the fossilized bones of the Plateosaurus trossingensis, revealing the complex anatomy of this extinct creature. The skeleton is displayed with its hind legs bent under its body, suggesting that it may have been in a resting or reclining position when it was preserved in the fossil record. The Plateosaurus trossingensis is an intriguing example of the diverse range of creatures that inhabited the Earth during the Late Triassic period. Its discovery and study have provided valuable insights into the evolution of dinosaurs and the prehistoric world. This illustration serves as a reminder of the rich history of zoology and paleontology, and the ongoing exploration of the natural world.
