EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, published in Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali (Dictionary of Natural Sciences) in Florence, Italy, in 1837, showcases two intriguing gecko species: the House Gecko (Hemidactylus frenatus, also known as the Ring-necked Gecko) and the Broad-tailed Gecko (Phyllurus platurus, also known as the Broad-tailed Ring-necked Gecko or the New Holland Gecko). The House Gecko, depicted on the left, is native to Africa and Asia, and is commonly found in houses and other human habitats. It is characterized by its distinctive ringed neck and its ability to change color and pattern for camouflage. The Broad-tailed Gecko, shown on the right, is native to Australia and New Guinea. It is easily identified by its broad, fan-like tail and its vibrant, contrasting coloration. Both geckos are popular in the herpetology world for their unique features and adaptations. This stunning illustration was engraved by Carini, drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretreatment, and directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, a renowned French botanical illustrator of the 19th century. Turpin's meticulous attention to detail and mastery of the copperplate stipple engraving technique are evident in this beautiful work. The illustration also includes various other reptiles, including snakes, such as the Cobra, Lancehead Viper, and Trigonocephale Fer-de-Lance, further showcasing the diverse world of natural science during this time. This image is a testament to the rich history of natural science and the dedication of its pioneers, who sought to document and preserve the natural world through intricate and accurate illustrations.
