The image is taken from Pierre de la Mesangere's Le Bon Genre, published by Henry Rene Allemagne. The fashionable ladies, dressed in the latest styles, are shown skillfully wielding their raquettes, or rackets, as they playfully chase the shuttlecock, or volant, back and forth across the verdant lawn. Several of the ladies have their hair styled in the fashionable short cut known as the martyr or victime, adding an air of sophistication and modernity to the scene.
