EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the charming facade of the Sussex Arms pub, located in the heart of Poplar, London. Established in the early 20th century, the Sussex Arms was a beloved local watering hole for many decades. The image shows the corner view of the pub, with its distinctive red brick exterior and ornate signage, which once proudly displayed the name "Sussex Arms" and the logo of Hoare and Company Limited. The history of the Sussex Arms can be traced back to the Trading Record documented on the reverse side of this print, which reveals that the pub was in operation as early as 1934 and continued to serve its community until at least 1961. The building, with its classic pub design and inviting atmosphere, was a cherished gathering place for locals and travelers alike. Sadly, as of July 2018, the Sussex Arms, like so many historic pubs before it, was no more. Demolished to make way for new development, the loss of this iconic pub is a reminder of the ever-changing landscape of our cities and the importance of preserving the memories of the past. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the Sussex Arms and the role it played in the lives of those who frequented it.
