1. Title: "Breynia australasiae, or New Holland Spatangus: A Hand-Coloured Copperplate Engraving of a Sea Urchin" This exquisite hand-coloured copperplate engraving showcases the intricate details of the Breynia australasiae, also known as the New Holland Spatangus or Spatangus australasiae. The sea urchin is depicted in its natural habitat, surrounded by the shimmering waters of the ocean. The image was drawn and engraved by the skilled hand of Richard Polydore Nodder, and published in William Elford Leach's Zoological Miscellany in 1815. The Breynia australasiae is a large, spherical sea urchin that is native to the southern hemisphere, particularly in the waters around Australia and New Zealand. Its distinctive features include the numerous, closely-packed spines that cover its surface, which are arranged in a regular pattern and vary in length and shape. The engraving captures the delicate beauty of these spines, as well as the subtle colouration of the sea urchin's body. The process of creating this engraving involved several steps. First, Nodder would draw the sea urchin with great care and attention to detail. The drawing was then transferred to a copper plate, which was coated with a thin layer of rosin and asphaltum to make it receptive to the engraving tool. The engraver would use a burin to carefully carve away the metal, creating the intricate lines and patterns that would later be filled in with colour. Finally, the plate was inked and pressed onto paper to create the finished print. This beautiful illustration is a testament to the artistry and scientific rigour of the early naturalists who sought to document the natural world around them. It remains an important record of the Breynia australasiae, and a stunning example of the art of hand-coloured copperplate engraving.
