EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases the renowned tenor opera singer, Louis Augustin Lemonnier, in the role of Henriquez from the opera "Le Muletier" by Ferdinand Herold. Performed at the Theatre Royal de l'Opéra Comique in Paris during 1823, Lemonnier's portrayal of Henriquez left a lasting impression on audiences. The lithograph, produced by F. Noel and illustrated by Alexandre-Marie Colin, is a stunning example of the theatrical art of the time. Lemonnier's expressive face and dramatic pose convey the intensity and passion of the character he portrays. His elegant costume, complete with a flowing cape and ornate hat, adds to the overall theatricality of the image. Born in Paris in 1794, Louis Augustin Lemonnier began his musical training as a choirboy at Notre-Dame Cathedral. He later studied under the renowned vocal coach, Jean-Louis Rey, and made his operatic debut in 1815 at the Théâtre Feydeau. Over the course of his career, Lemonnier would perform in numerous productions at the Théâtre Italien, Théâtre des Italiens, and the Théâtre de l'Opéra-Comique. The lithograph is a testament to Lemonnier's talent and the enduring impact of his performances. It serves as a reminder of the rich history of opera and the artists who have brought its stories to life on the stage.
