EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured engraving, titled "Troubadour playing on six instruments," depicts a street musician in full swing, entertaining Prussian and Scots soldiers during the aftermath of the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The troubadour, with a mischievous smile and an air of pure joy, skillfully plays multiple instruments at once. He uses his head, elbows, and knees to produce melodies on the pan pipes, strums the mandolin with his right hand, strikes the drum with his left, taps the triangle with his foot, and shakes the cymbals and three rows of bells on his plumed hat. The soldiers, in their military uniforms, are intrigued by the troubadour's performance, momentarily forgetting the turmoil and tension of the battlefield. This engraving, created by Pierre de la Mesangere for his publication "Le Bon Genre" in Paris in 1817, is a testament to the power of music to bring people together, even in the most unexpected of places and circumstances.
