EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a proud White Dorking Fowl cock and hen, winners of the first prize at the Colchester Show in 1873. Bred by Miss Fairhurst, these birds were a sensation during the Victorian era, with their distinctive silver-grey and white plumage making them a popular choice among poultry enthusiasts. The image is based on an illustration by J.W. Ludlow, as featured in Lewis Wright's The Illustrated Book of Poultry published by Cassell, London, in 1890. Chromolithography, a printing technique that allowed for vibrant and detailed color reproductions, was at the height of its popularity during this period, making this an exquisite example of the time. The White Dorking Fowl, a breed of domestic fowl (Gallus gallus domesticus), was admired not only for its exotic appearance but also for its excellent laying abilities. The breed originated in the English county of Kent, specifically in the towns of Ashford and Birmingham, around the late 1800s. The craze for ornithology and game birds was at an all-time high during this era, and breeding and showing poultry was a popular pastime for the affluent. Although the White Dorking Fowl was admired for its beauty, it is essential to note that the practice of cockfighting, which was prevalent during this time, is now considered cruel and inhumane. This image, therefore, serves as a reminder of the historical context in which these birds were bred and exhibited, rather than an endorsement of cockfighting or any other form of animal cruelty.
