EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, circa 1800, depicts a Turkish Bath or Hamam in Davenport, likely in England. The Hamam, an essential part of Middle Eastern and European cultures for centuries, was a place of relaxation, socialization, and hygiene. In this print, we see a series of intricately tiled rooms, each with a specific purpose. In the foreground, a man lies on a marble slab, receiving treatment from an attendant. The attendant, dressed in traditional Turkish clothing, wields a large, curved knife known as a "trowel," which he uses to scrape off dead skin cells, promoting rejuvenation and renewal. The man's face is covered with a cloth to protect his modesty and allow the steam to penetrate deeper into his pores. To the left, we see a large, ornate copper basin filled with water, used for washing and rinsing. In the background, we can make out a series of smaller rooms, each with its unique function. The Egyptian-inspired decor, with its intricate patterns and vibrant colors, adds to the exotic and alluring atmosphere of the Turkish Bath. The Turkish Bath was not only a place for personal hygiene but also for socializing and relaxation. People would spend hours at the Hamam, engaging in conversation, playing games, and enjoying the therapeutic benefits of the steam and water. This print offers a glimpse into the rich history and cultural significance of the Turkish Bath, a tradition that continues to inspire and captivate us today.
