EDITORS COMMENTS
"This photograph showcases a signed image of the iconic RMS Queen Mary, accompanied by a vintage menu, both part of the personal Captain John Treasure Jones Archive. Born and raised on a small farm in Pembrokeshire, South Wales, John Treasure Jones (1905-1993) embarked on his maritime journey at the tender age of fifteen. He spent his early years as an indentured apprentice on tramp steamers, slowly working his way up to fame and fortune on the world's most famous ocean liners. In 1929, Jones joined the White Star Line, and in 1937, he became a valued member of the Cunard White Star Line. During the Second World War, Jones served as a commander in the Royal Naval Reserve, bravely facing the perils of the Atlantic and being torpedoed twice. He was mentioned twice in despatches for his heroic actions. After the war, Jones rejoined Cunard, commanding several renowned liners such as Saxonia, Mauretania, and Queen Elizabeth. His most notable achievement came in 1965 when he served as the last commander of the RMS Queen Mary, taking her on her final voyage from Southampton to her retirement home in Long Beach, California. Jones' autobiography, "Tramp to Queen," was published posthumously in 2008, offering a personal insight into the life of this remarkable mariner. This evocative collection of memorabilia, now part of the Captain John Treasure Jones Archive, offers a glimpse into the rich history of transport and travel during the golden age of ocean liners."
