EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Piper PA-24-260B Commanche G-ATOY (MSN 24-754321-260B), taxis towards a reception committee after completing its record-breaking solo round-the-world flight. Piloted by the fearless British aviator Sheila Scott OBE, this aircraft, named "Myth Too," made history on July 20, 1966, as the first light aircraft to circumnavigate the globe alone. Scott's achievement shattered the previous record held by a larger, multi-engine aircraft and solidified her place in aviation history. The Commanche, a versatile and high-performance single-engine airplane, proved to be an ideal choice for this daring journey. Its advanced design and capabilities enabled Scott to cover over 23,000 miles (37,000 kilometers) in just 128 hours, averaging a speed of 153 miles per hour (246 kilometers per hour). As G-ATOY taxis to a halt, the crowd's jubilant welcome reflects the awe and admiration inspired by Scott's groundbreaking accomplishment. This iconic image encapsulates the spirit of adventure, resilience, and innovation that defines aviation history.
