EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving is a beautiful example of ornithological art from the early 19th century. The image, taken from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, features three distinct waterbirds: the Red Phalarope (Phalaropus fulicarius), the Sungrebe (Heliornis fulica), and the Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo). The Red Phalarope, depicted in the foreground, is a small wading bird with distinctive red feathers on its back and wings. It is a migratory bird, with breeding grounds in the Arctic and wintering grounds in the southern hemisphere. The Red Phalarope is known for its unique breeding behavior, in which the female incubates the eggs while the male performs the majority of the feeding duties. In the middle ground, the Sungrebe, also known as the American Finfoot, is shown with its distinctive webbed feet. This bird is a resident of South America and is an excellent swimmer and diver. It is a shy and elusive bird, making it difficult to observe in the wild. The Great Cormorant, depicted in the background, is a large, black waterbird with a long neck and distinctive crest. It is a widespread bird, found in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. The Great Cormorant is a skilled fisher, using its long neck to scan the water for prey and its webbed feet to propel itself underwater. This beautiful engraving was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The engraving was executed by Madame Massard, directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The intricate stipple engraving technique used in this print allowed for a high level of detail and texture, resulting in a stunning representation of these three fascinating waterbirds.
