Rigi-Kulm, Switzerland: A Panoramic View of a Mountain Railways' Grand Beginning This photograph, taken circa 1899, showcases the breathtaking panorama of Rigi-Kulm in Switzerland, with the historic rack railways of Arth-Rigi-Bahn and Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn winding their way up the steep mountain slopes. The railways, operated by the Rigi-Bahnen, were the first mountain railways in Europe, with the Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn starting operation on May 21, 1871, and the Arth-Rigi-Bahn finishing on June 4, 1875. The Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn, visible on the left side of the image, began its journey from Vitznau and ascended to the summit of Rigi-Kulm, offering passengers a unique and thrilling experience as they traversed the steep, alpine terrain. The Arth-Rigi-Bahn, on the right side, connected Arth-Goldau to the summit, providing access from the other side of the mountain. These railways marked a significant milestone in transportation history, as they were the first electrified standard gauge rack-railways in the world, with the Arth-Rigi-Bahn becoming the first to be electrified in 1907, followed by the Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn in 1937. The electrification allowed for a more efficient and environmentally friendly means of transport, enhancing the overall experience for travelers. The summit of Rigi-Kulm, with its stunning vistas of the Alps and the surrounding landscape, has been a popular destination for tourists since the opening of the railways. The hotels and restaurants at the summit offer visitors a chance to relax and enjoy the breathtaking views, making it a must-visit location for those seeking adventure and a touch of history in the heart of the Swiss Alps.
