EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment of triumph for Charles William Anderson Scott AFC (1903-1946) and Tom Campbell Black (1899-1936) as they stand in front of their de Havilland DH88 Comet racer, having won the prestigious MacRobertson Air Race from London to Melbourne in 1934. The MacRobertson Air Race, also known as the London-Melbourne Air Race, was an epic long-distance aviation contest that took place between August 20 and November 14, 1934. The race covered a distance of approximately 14,500 miles (23,330 kilometers) and attracted a total of 52 entries from various parts of the world. Charles William Anderson Scott, a British aviator, and Tom Campbell Black, a South African, flew together as a team and completed the race in an impressive time of 7 days, 21 hours, 5 minutes, and 21 seconds. Their victory made headlines around the world, and they were hailed as heroes of the skies. The de Havilland DH88 Comet, a sleek and fast monoplane, was a perfect match for the long-distance race, and its aerodynamic design and efficient engine made it the ideal choice for the transcontinental journey. This photograph is a testament to the spirit of adventure and the pioneering achievements of aviation history. It captures the excitement and thrill of the MacRobertson Air Race and the determination of two brave pilots who dared to push the boundaries of what was possible in the realm of aviation. The image of Scott and Black in front of their winning racer is a powerful reminder of the ingenuity, courage, and perseverance of the early aviators and their remarkable feats.
