EDITORS COMMENTS
Juan de la Cierva, the Spanish inventor and aviation pioneer, is seen here in the cockpit of his innovative creation, the Cierva C30 autogiro, at Hanworth Air Park in Middlesex, England, in April 1930. Born in Madrid in 1895, de la Cierva is best known for his development of the autogiro, a type of rotorcraft that combines the features of both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. The C30 was the third model of his autogiro design, which featured a more streamlined fuselage and improved control systems. In this image, de la Cierva, dressed in a leather flight helmet and goggles, concentrates intently as he prepares for takeoff. The C30 autogiro behind him is a testament to the groundbreaking aviation technology of the time. With its distinctive rotor blades and open cockpit, the autogiro represented a significant step forward in the field of transport aviation. Hanworth Air Park, located in Middlesex, was a major center for aviation research and development in the early 20th century. It was here that de la Cierva conducted many of his tests and demonstrations of the Cierva Autogiro Company's aircraft. The park's proximity to London made it an ideal location for showcasing the potential of this new type of aircraft to the public and to potential investors. The date of this photograph is 1930, but sadly, Juan de la Cierva's life was cut short in 1936, when he was killed in a flying accident. Despite his untimely death, his contributions to the field of aviation continued to be felt, and the autogiro paved the way for the development of modern helicopters. This photograph captures a moment in aviation history, with Juan de la Cierva at the forefront of innovation and progress.
