A Royal Yacht of 1674 by G. H. Davis

A diagrammatic reconstruction painting of a royal yacht owned by King Charles II, one of two presented to him by the Dutch when he was restored to the throne. Parts of the deck are diagrammatically removed to reveal the luxurious appointments of the interior. The artist, G. H. Davis, drew the reconstruction by referring to the famous model in the Royal Naval College at Greenwich (claimed to represent the Catharine, constructed by Phineas Pett at Chatham in 1674).

EDITORS COMMENTS
This diagrammatic reconstruction painting by G. H. Davis, created in 1937, offers a unique glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of a royal yacht owned by King Charles II of England. The yacht, one of two presented to him by the Dutch upon his restoration to the throne in 1674, is believed to be represented by the Catharine, constructed by Phineas Pett at Chatham Dockyard. The intricately detailed image reveals the luxurious interior of the vessel, with parts of the deck diagrammatically removed to provide an unobstructed view. King Charles II's yacht was a symbol of his power and wealth, a floating palace designed to transport him in style and comfort. The interior is adorned with rich furnishings, intricate woodwork, and elegant decorations, reflecting the extravagance of the 17th century. The artist, G. H. Davis, meticulously reconstructed this image by referring to the famous model of the Catharine, which is housed in the Royal Naval College at Greenwich. Davis's painting is an invaluable historical record of the lavish interiors of royal yachts from the seventeenth century, providing a fascinating insight into the world of maritime luxury and the opulence of the English monarchy during this period.
