Russian and Montenegrin Soldiers in Crete
Russian and Montenegrin Soldiers in Crete. Although much of modern Greece had been independent since the 1820s, Crete remained in Ottoman hands. A Greek force arrived to annex the island in 1897 and the Great Powers acted, occupying the island and dividing it into British, French, Russian and Italian areas of control. In 1898, Turkish troops were ejected and a national government was set up, still nominally under Ottoman suzerainty. Prince George, was made High Commissioner, and a joint Muslim-Christian assembly was part-elected, part-appointed

EDITORS COMMENTS
Russian and Montenegrin Soldiers in Crete, 1898: A Moment of Peace Amidst Political Tensions This evocative photograph captures a moment of peace and camaraderie between Russian and Montenegrin soldiers during the political turmoil of Crete's annexation. In the late 19th century, much of modern Greece had gained independence from the Ottoman Empire, but Crete remained under Ottoman rule. In 1897, a Greek force attempted to annex the island, leading to the intervention of the Great Powers. The island was divided into British, French, Russian, and Italian areas of control, with Turkish troops eventually being ejected. In the photograph, Russian and Montenegrin soldiers, dressed in their uniforms, stand together in a friendly manner, suggesting a level of cooperation between the forces. The scene is set against the backdrop of the beautiful island of Crete, with its rugged terrain and clear blue sky. The soldiers' expressions convey a sense of calm and determination, as they carry out their duties as peacekeepers in this historically significant moment. Despite the political tensions and the eventual division of the island, this photograph serves as a reminder of the shared experiences and bonds that developed between soldiers from different nations during this period of occupation. It is a poignant snapshot of a moment in history when the complexities of international relations and political power plays were played out on the ground, with the lives of ordinary soldiers and civilians caught in the middle.
