EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Thomas Allin: A Naval Commander in the Service of the English Crown during the English Civil War and the Anglo-Dutch Wars Sir Thomas Allin (1612-1685) was a distinguished naval commander who served the English Crown during the tumultuous period of the English Civil War and the Anglo-Dutch Wars. Born in the early 17th century, Allin rose to prominence under the patronage of Prince Rupert of the Rhine, the Royalist commander-in-chief of the English army and navy during the Civil War. Allin's naval career began in earnest during the First English Civil War (1642-1646), where he commanded a Royalist frigate in the English Channel. He distinguished himself in numerous engagements against the Parliamentary forces, including the Battle of Portland (1643), where he played a crucial role in preventing the Parliamentary fleet from breaking through the Royalist blockade. Following the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660, Allin continued his naval service under King Charles II. He was appointed Commodore of the Fleet in 1664 and played a significant role in the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-1667). Allin commanded the flagship HMS Royal Katherine during the Battle of Lowestoft (1665), where he inflicted a decisive defeat on the Dutch fleet. Allin's reputation as a skilled and capable naval commander was further solidified during the Third Anglo-Dutch War (1672-1674), where he commanded the fleet in the English Channel. Despite being outnumbered, Allin managed to repel multiple Dutch attacks and successfully defended the English coastline. Sir Thomas Allin's contributions to English naval history are significant, and his career highlights the importance of naval power during the early modern period. This image of Sir Thomas Allin, a naval commander favoured by Prince Rupert, serves as a reminder of the pivotal role he played in defending the English Crown during times of war and political upheaval.
