EDITORS COMMENTS
Steady the Drums and Fifes" is a captivating color photolithograph depicting a pivotal moment during the Battle of Albuera in the Peninsular War of 1808-1811. The image, published in 1960, is a reproduction of a painting by Lady Butler and is part of the Middlesex Regiment Museum Collection. The scene captures the determination and bravery of the 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot as they continue to play their drums and fifes amidst the chaos and danger of the battlefield. The title of the piece comes from the famous order given by Sir John Moore to his troops during the retreat from Corunna in 1809, "Steady, my boys, steady. Play the men at their work. Play the drums." The vibrant colors of the photolithograph bring the image to life, with the red coats of the soldiers standing out against the green and brown tones of the battlefield. The expressions on the faces of the soldiers are intense, with some focused on their instruments and others looking out towards the horizon, scanning for any signs of the enemy. The Battle of Albuera was a significant engagement in the Peninsular War, with the British forces under Sir John Moore facing off against the French army led by Marshal Soult. The battle took place on May 16, 1811, and resulted in a costly victory for the British, with heavy casualties on both sides. This powerful image serves as a reminder of the courage and resilience of the soldiers who fought in the Peninsular War, and the important role that music played in maintaining morale and keeping the troops focused during the heat of battle. The 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot, and their steady drums and fifes, played a crucial part in this history, and their legacy continues to be honored through this beautiful reproduction.
