EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Ebenezer Sibly's Universal System of Natural History published in 1794-1796, showcases two intriguing species of sloths: the Ursiform sloth, Ursus labiatus, and the Three-toed sloth, Bradypus torquatus. The Ursiform sloth, also known as the Brown-throated sloth or the Lard Buck, is depicted on the left side of the image. This arboreal mammal is characterized by its long, curved claws and its relatively short, dense fur. Its face is marked by a distinctive brown patch that extends from its nose to its chest. On the right side of the illustration, the Three-toed sloth, Bradypus torquatus, is shown. As suggested by its name, this sloth has only three toes on each limb, which are adapted for grasping and moving through the trees. Its fur is longer and coarser than that of the Ursiform sloth, and its coloration is primarily grayish-brown. The Three-toed sloth is also known for its slow movement and its unique feeding behavior, as it spends most of its life hanging upside down from trees and only comes down to the ground to defecate and mate. Both of these sloths were meticulously drawn and engraved by the skilled hand of Johann Ihle, who worked under the direction of Ebenezer Sibly. The resulting image is a beautiful and accurate representation of these fascinating creatures, which were important additions to the growing body of natural history knowledge during the late 18th century.
