EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Antoine Jussieu's Dictionary of Natural Science published in Florence, Italy in 1837, showcases two distinct and captivating birds of prey native to the Old World: the Yellow-billed Kite (Milvus aegyptius) and the Swallow-tailed Kite (Elanoides forficatus). The Yellow-billed Kite, depicted on the left, is a medium-sized bird with a distinctive yellow beak and legs. Its plumage is predominantly brown, with a white underbelly and black wingtips. This bird of prey is found across Africa, southern Europe, and Asia, and is known for its agile flight and hunting skills. It feeds primarily on reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals. The Swallow-tailed Kite, illustrated on the right, is a slender and graceful bird with a long, swallow-like tail. Its plumage is predominantly dark brown, with a white underbelly and a distinctive white patch on the underside of its wings. This bird is native to Central and South America, and is known for its unique hunting technique of hovering in the air and using its long, decurved beak to snatch prey from the ground. This stunning illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a French naturalist and artist, and was engraved by Terreni under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The engraving was published by Batelli e Figli, a renowned Italian publishing house. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this engraving serve as a testament to the artistry and scientific accuracy of the time.
