This is a bottle party sponsored by the town vicar
This is a bottle party sponsored by the town vicar. According to tradition the rector of Hallaton has to provide the beer which fills the bottle that is, the five-pint barrel which is used as football in the annual inter-village bottle kicking contest held between the village of Hallaton and Medbury. He also has to provide a hare pie to be divided among the players. The object is to get the barrel, by fair means or foul, over the boundary brook dividing the two villages. After a recent contest, Fred Jones, of Hallaton, is shown top of the Butter Cross on the village green holding the bottle aloft. After this victory flourish the beer was divided among the villagers. But five pints didn t go far. There was a heavy run on the village pubs to make up the deficiencey. Leicestershire, 12th July 1946

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a unique tradition in the quaint village of Hallaton, Leicestershire. The image showcases a lively bottle party sponsored by none other than the town vicar himself. Steeped in age-old customs, this event revolves around the annual inter-village bottle kicking contest between Hallaton and Medbury. As per tradition, it is the rector's responsibility to provide the beer that fills the five-pint barrel used as a football during this spirited competition. Additionally, he must also present a hare pie to be shared among the players. The ultimate goal for each team is to get this barrel over the boundary brook that separates these neighboring villages. In this particular snapshot, we witness Fred Jones of Hallaton triumphantly atop the Butter Cross on the village green, proudly hoisting aloft the coveted bottle after securing victory for his team. Following this momentous occasion, villagers eagerly gathered to partake in their share of celebratory beer; however, with only five pints available from their hard-fought win, local pubs experienced an overwhelming demand to quench everyone's thirst. This nostalgic photograph not only encapsulates a cherished moment in history but also highlights how traditions like these foster community spirit and bring people together through laughter and friendly competition.
