Yachting scene and TSS Duke of Lancaster, 1928-1948
Original oil painting by Norman Wilkinson for a London Midland & Scottish Railway poster. Many British railway companies operated ferry services. Wilkinson was commissioned by several of the companies to produce artwork for use in posters promoting their services. The London Midland & Scottish Railway Company (LMS) was formed in 1923, and operated ferries across the Irish Sea on routes between Holyhead and Dublin, and Heysham and Belfast. In 1948 all the private railway companies shipping fleets were nationalised, becoming part of the British Transport Commission. The Duke of Lancaster sailed on the Heysham-Belfast route from 1928 until 1956

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning yachting scene and the majestic TSS Duke of Lancaster, captured in an original oil painting by the talented Norman Wilkinson. Commissioned by the London Midland & Scottish Railway Company (LMS), this artwork was intended for use in posters promoting their ferry services. During the years 1928-1948, numerous British railway companies operated ferry services, including LMS. The company's ferries traversed across the Irish Sea on routes connecting Holyhead and Dublin, as well as Heysham and Belfast. This particular vessel, the Duke of Lancaster, embarked on its voyages along the Heysham-Belfast route from 1928 until 1956. It is fascinating to note that in 1948, all private railway companies' shipping fleets were nationalized under the British Transport Commission. This marked a significant transition in history when these once privately-owned vessels became part of a larger governmental organization. The National Railway Museum proudly presents this remarkable print from their Pictorial Collection. It serves as both a testament to Britain's rich maritime heritage and an homage to Norman Wilkinson's artistic prowess. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time to witness not only a picturesque yachting scene but also glimpse into an era when railways played an integral role in connecting people across vast bodies of water.
