EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a bygone era, showcasing a vintage LNER poster promoting the idyllic coastal resort of Cleethorpes in Lincolnshire. Created between 1923 and 1947 for the London & North Eastern Railway, this artwork by Frank Newbould transports us back to a time when rail travel was at its peak. The poster depicts a charming scene of leisurely seaside enjoyment. A man and woman are seen holding hands with a small child as they paddle in the refreshing sea waters. The joy on their faces is evident, reflecting the carefree spirit that permeated Cleethorpes during this period. Frank Newbould's artistic talent shines through in this piece, which showcases his ability to capture both movement and emotion. Having studied at Bradford College of Art and later joining the War Office, Newbould's work extended beyond railway posters; he also designed for renowned companies such as GWR (Great Western Railway), Orient Line, and Belgian Railways. This print not only serves as an exquisite piece of art but also offers us a glimpse into history – reminding us of simpler times spent enjoying sun-soaked beaches along Britain's coastlines. It is truly an evocative representation of Cleethorpes' allure during its heyday as a popular holiday destination.
