EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning LNER poster from 1930, inviting travelers to explore the picturesque Yorkshire coast. Created by the talented Canadian artist Austin Cooper, this artwork was commissioned by London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to this enchanting destination. Cooper's artistic prowess shines through as he captures the essence of the coastline with remarkable precision and beauty. Originally studying art in Cardiff and Arbroath, Cooper embarked on his career as a commercial artist in Montreal before returning to London in 1922. His exceptional talent led him to design posters not only for LNER but also for Indian State Railways and London Transport. In fact, his first exhibition took place at the esteemed London Gallery in 1948. The image depicted within this print transports us back to the vibrant social scene of the 1930s. It offers glimpses into various aspects of personal life during that era - men and women enjoying recreational activities such as swimming or playing golf while donning fashionable swimwear and attire of their time. The poster itself serves as a window into society's interests during that period, showcasing how people sought solace and relaxation amidst nature's splendor. Preserved meticulously by NRM/Pictorial Collection at National Railway Museum, this print allows us to appreciate both Cooper's artistic brilliance and an era long gone by. It serves as a testament to the enduring allure of railway travel and its ability to transport us not only physically but also emotionally across time and space
