EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the solemn beauty of crosses at the Friedhof der Namenlosen in Vienna. Located near the Danube river, this cemetery was established in 1840 to honor anonymous drowned individuals found along its banks. The crosses, standing tall and proud, represent the resting place of 478 victims, with the last one being laid to rest in 1940. The word "Unknown" inscribed on each cross serves as a poignant reminder of the mysterious identities these souls held in life. Through this image, we witness a powerful symbol of unity and remembrance amidst nature's tranquility. The low angle view and close-up shot highlight every detail of these crosses, showcasing their intricate design and creative use within this sacred space. The surrounding plants add an element of natural beauty to the scene while emphasizing the connection between life and death. As we observe this picturesque landscape bathed in sunlight, it evokes a sense of reverence and contemplation. It is here that worshipers gather to pray and celebrate their faith through traditional Christian rituals. In this moment frozen by Herwig Prammer's lens, we are reminded of both our own mortality and the enduring power of religious devotion. This photograph encapsulates not only a physical place but also emotions such as peace, spirituality, and respect for those who have passed on.
