The Cat eye Nebula seen from the Hubble Telescope

The Cats Eye Nebula. The planetary nebula known as the Cats Eye Nebula (NGC 6543) as seen from the Hubble Space Telescope. The shells (red and green) of gas seen here have been expelled by a dying star (blue centre) during the last stages of its life. Astronomers have suggested, in order to explain the intricate features seen in the shells, that another star is orbiting around the dying star. The image is a composite of three exposures taken at red (ionised hydrogen), green (ionised nitrogen) and blue (neutral oxygen) wavelengths and was taken on September 18th 1994

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Cat's Eye Nebula, as captured by the powerful lens of the Hubble Space Telescope. The planetary nebula, officially known as NGC 6543, unveils a celestial spectacle that is nothing short of awe-inspiring. The vibrant shells of gas, depicted in striking red and green hues, are remnants expelled by a dying star at its final stages. Nestled within this cosmic artwork lies a brilliant blue center - the fading heartbeat of this celestial entity. Intriguingly, astronomers have theorized that another star orbits around this dying giant, offering an explanation for the intricate features observed within these ethereal shells. To create this breathtaking image, three exposures were meticulously combined: one capturing ionized hydrogen in vivid red tones; another revealing ionized nitrogen in alluring greens; and finally, neutral oxygen portrayed through serene blues. This composite snapshot was taken on September 18th, 1994 – immortalizing a moment frozen in time amidst our vast universe. As we gaze upon this extraordinary photograph from Science Photo Library's collection of scientific wonders, we are reminded once again of both the fragility and magnificence inherent to stellar existence. It serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about our place in the cosmos and our relentless pursuit to unravel its mysteries through cutting-edge technology like Hubble's remarkable imagery.
