EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Egyptian mathematical papyrus known as the Moscow Mathematical Papyrus. Dating back to the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC, this ancient roll of papyrus was acquired by Russian Egyptologist Vladimir Golenishchev in Thebes during the 1890s. Currently housed in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, this 5.5-meter-long scroll contains a wealth of mathematical knowledge. Among its contents are 25 intriguing mathematical problems encompassing algebra, arithmetic, and geometry. Problem number 14 depicted in this image focuses on determining the volume of a frustum—a truncated square pyramid—illustrated on the left side.
