False-colour SEM of molybdenum disulphide

False-colour scanning electron micrograph of scratches on the surface of a lubricating film of molybdenum disulphide (orange) from a dry film anti- scuffing aerosol spray. The spray contains the lubricant, a volatile organic solvent and a small amount of bonding resin. The solvent evaporates, leaving a layer of randomly-dried rings of molybdenum disulphide. These raised rings are gradually scratched and abraded with use, slowly smearing out to produce a thin film. Dry film lubricants have several advantages over oils; they do not pick up dust, can be used to higher temperatures and do not tend to contaminate other parts. Magnification: x300 at 6x4.5cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour scanning electron micrograph of scratches on the surface of a lubricating film made from molybdenum disulphide. The vibrant orange hue brings to life the intricate details of this microscopic world. The image captures the aftermath of using a dry film anti-scuffing aerosol spray, which consists of not only the lubricant but also a volatile organic solvent and a small amount of bonding resin. As the solvent evaporates, it leaves behind randomly-dried rings of molybdenum disulphide on the surface. These raised rings serve as protection for various parts, gradually getting scratched and abraded with use. Over time, these scratches create an intriguing pattern that slowly smears out to produce a thin film. Dry film lubricants like this one offer numerous advantages over traditional oils; they resist dust accumulation, can withstand higher temperatures, and do not contaminate other components. With its magnification at x300 and presented in 6x4.5cm size, this SEM image allows us to appreciate the beauty hidden within chemical compounds such as molybdenum disulphide. It serves as a reminder that even at microscopic levels, science offers endless wonders waiting to be explored and understood.
