Lunar gravity

Lunar gravity. Map of gravity around the Moon, derived from data gathered by the Clementine spacecraft. The map shows differences between the gravity distribution predicted by a computer model and observed gravity. Yellow areas are those where the model is correct. Red areas have higher gravity than expected; green, blue and purple have progressively less than predicted. The gravity data were gathered by measuring velocity deviations of Clementine in orbit. The prominent feature at bottom centre is the Mare Orientale

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of lunar gravity, revealing a mesmerizing map derived from data collected by the Clementine spacecraft. The image vividly displays variations in gravity distribution across the Moon, comparing computer model predictions with observed gravity measurements. The yellow areas indicate regions where the model accurately predicts gravity levels. However, it is in the red areas that we witness a fascinating phenomenon - higher gravity than anticipated. In contrast, shades of green, blue, and purple represent progressively lower gravitational forces than predicted. The Clementine spacecraft employed velocity deviation measurements during its orbit to gather these precise gravity data points. One cannot help but be drawn to the prominent feature at the bottom center of this image - Mare Orientale - an awe-inspiring lunar formation that captivates both scientists and astronomy enthusiasts alike. As we delve into this remarkable visual representation of lunar gravitation, our understanding deepens regarding celestial bodies' complex dynamics and their influence on space exploration and cosmology studies. This extraordinary photograph serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our universe beyond Earth's boundaries.
