William Bartram, US naturalist
William Bartram (1739-1823), American botanist and writer. Bartram was the fifth son of the noted botanist John Bartram. As a child he showed talent for drawing plants, and was offered a position as a printer by Benjamin Franklin. He declined this, instead setting off on a 640- kilometre-long expedition along St Johns River, Florida, with his father. In 1791 Bartram published his Travels to much acclaim, although the virtues that he attributed to the Native American people he encountered were seen as foolish. Bartram joined the 1803 expedition to Louisiana, recording and collecting botany of the region

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases William Bartram, a prominent US naturalist and botanist from the 18th century. Born in 1739 as the fifth son of renowned botanist John Bartram, young William exhibited exceptional talent for drawing plants. Benjamin Franklin recognized his potential and offered him a position as a printer, but Bartram had different plans. Instead, he embarked on an extraordinary expedition alongside his father along Florida's St Johns River, covering an impressive distance of 640 kilometers. This journey laid the foundation for his later accomplishments in the field of botany. In 1791, Bartram published his acclaimed work titled "Travels" which garnered widespread recognition. However, some critics dismissed his admiration for Native American people he encountered during his travels as foolishness. Bartram's passion for exploration did not wane over time. In 1803, he joined an expedition to Louisiana where he meticulously recorded and collected botanical specimens from the region. This monochrome illustration captures the essence of this remarkable scientist and writer who left an indelible mark on history through his contributions to botany. The portrait serves as a poignant reminder of Bartram's legacy and enduring impact on our understanding of nature.
