William Lionel Wyllie (WLW) was a British artist who specialized in maritime art. He was born in London in 1851 and began his career as an apprentice to a wood engraver. His works were exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1876 onward and he became known for his detailed paintings of ships, naval battles, coastal scenes, and harbor views. He also produced etchings, lithographs and watercolors. WLW was a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists and served as President from 1906-1915. He received numerous awards including the Order of Merit from King Edward VII in 1910 for his contributions to art. WLW's works are held by many public galleries including the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England where he is considered one of Britain's most important marine painters.
